In October, in an 8-0 vote, the Bloomington City Council declared the second Monday of every October Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Bloomington. While Mayor John Hamilton had proclaimed October 8, 2018, as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, the City Council resolution puts the holiday on the City calendar every year, although it is not an official holiday. It replaces a day that is, in many parts of the country, still recognized as Columbus Day.

Bloom covered the issue in the October/November 2019 story “Native American Heritage Celebration in November.”
