Following a one-year hiatus, Indiana University’s iconic “Light Totem” was re-lit on Saturday, June 21, as part of the university’s annual Midsummer Night at the IU Art Museum. Fire dancers coupled with the high-energy funk of The Dynamics helped reign in the reinstallation of the 70-foot-tall sculpture, which returned after several structural repairs. Soon-to-retire IU Art Museum Director Heidi Gealt and “Light Totem” creator Rob Shakespeare, professor of lighting design in the Department of Theatre and Contemporary Dance, spurred hundreds of visitors to assist in the light show. Originally intended as a temporary tribute to the Museum’s 25th anniversary in 2007, the “Light Totem” now stands as a permanent landmark for the entire community.
